Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to help someone manage a challenge like weight loss, smoking, a troubling habit, stress, the ‘blues’ or anxiety.
When someone is hypnotized (typically called being in a “trance”) they are physically relaxed yet mentally focused. Everyone has experienced being in a trance at some stage of their lives, being totally involved in watching a good film, listening to a talk or lecture, driving a familiar route, listening to music or reading, slipping down into sleep and waking up. It is a natural state.
Your mind operates on two levels, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Deep relaxation achieved through hypnosis places the conscious mind on ‘pause’ mode and opens the door to the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is logical, calculating, rational, critical focused on the external world. The subconscious contains our long term memory, all our habit patterns. It stores the “programming” from others that tells us we are smart, competent, likable—-or NOT! It is estimated that the impulses for over 80% of our behavior arise from the subconscious mind. And we are not consciously aware of those impulses. In hypnosis we can access those impulses and rework the programming that drives those behaviors and feelings that trouble us.
Many people are able to resolve problem behavior patterns on their own, but, like a trainer coaching an athlete, a hypnotherapist can typically help an individual achieve results faster and help them perform at a higher level than they can reach all on their own.
